TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG BREED

Choosing a FUR CHILD to become a member of your family is a

BIG DECISION.

Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice

Henry as a puppy

It is an unfortunate fact that many people choose a dog that is entirely not suitable for their family, their life-style & personalities. Furkids are intelligent sensitive creatures that need to be understood & given the chance to express themselves naturally so they become an integrated part of your life. Unless you own a working dog, you are probably looking for companion.

A few factors to consider:

  • Possibly the most important factor to consider is BREED BEHAVIOR

  • BREED SIZE, some big dogs seem bigger than others. example: a Deer Hound is a large tall dog but takes up surprisingly small amount of room when lying down, it also moves quietly & with ease. Whereas a Dog like "BIG" Henry is prone to knocking things over sprawling out all over the floor like a giant rug & can reach the kitchen bench with ease. ( I love all these things about him, that's why this breed works for me) but maybe not the slobber affect so much.

(Big)Henry & Gracie the Spoodle

  • The cost of feeding a dog can be a significant factor as well. some  giant breeds don't eat a huge amount whereas some medium breeds can consume more than you would think not to forget the little guys, their bill is not so much.

  • There will also be vet bills, yearly vaccinations, worming, flea & tick treatment, grooming etc. The bigger the dog, The more expensive it gets.

  • Lifestyle is another important factor. You want to get a breed that will fit in with you, if you are active you can go for more more active canines. eg. Border Collies need lots of stimulation to keep them out of trouble.Provided they get sufficient exercise they will be happy to fit into your routine. Other active breeds, Airedale, Australian Shepard, Dalmation, Springer Spaniel. If you lead a more laidback lifestyle perhaps a less active breed will suit, eg laidback breeds, Mastiff, Great Dane, Blood Hound, Newfoundland, Basset Hound.

ALL DOGS HAVE THEIR OWN GREAT TRAITS.

DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE ADDING YOUR NEWEST FAMILY MEMBER.

LOVE, LOVE DOGS

So lets face it Henry is a big lump.... a little lazy & not really into fetch.

Here are a few suggestions of alternate games to play with your dog.

HIDE & SEEK

This childhood game isn’t just reserved for the human kids. Your pup can partake in the fun, too. Find one of your dog’s favorite toys or grab a handful of treats. Have your dog sit and stay in one room. Then, go and hide in another. Once you’ve found yourself in a good hiding place, call your dog. When he/she finds you, reward enthusiastically with treats and praise.

This game will work both brains and senses.

 Doggy Treat Hunt

It doesn’t have to be Easter for your dog to play this egg-hunt-inspired game. Grab some of his favorite smelly treats, either alone or stuffed inside a treat-holding toy, and hide them around the living room or backyard. Make sure your canine companion is in another room so he/she doesn’t see or smell the secret hiding spots. Then invite your furkid into the room or backyard and watch them sniff away in search of the hidden treasure.

 Roundabout Dog

This activityis perfect perfect for a family with children. Every member sits around the room (at least 7 metres from one another) with a handful of treats. Then, every person will take turns calling out their dog’s name. Every time the dog comes, he should be rewarded with treats and praise. When he has accomplished the game indoors, try taking it outside and spread out even further from one another especially if you have a larger breed & an active pup.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR FURKID TODAY

Get out there & play

RECIPE NUMBER 2

BAKED DOG BONE BISCUITS

PEANUT BUTTER & SWEET POTATO BISCUITS

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup sweet potato cooked & mashed

2 eggs

1/2 cup rolled oats

2 cups wholemeal flour

3Tbsp peanut butter

1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C

In one bowl combine the dry ingredients together. Flour, oats & cinnamon.

In a second bowl combine the wet ingredients, eggs, sweet potato & peanut butter.

Stir the wet ingredients into the dry

Pour onto a floured surface & roll to a 1.5cm thickness. A touch of flour on your hands & rolling pin will help with any stickiness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes you know your pooch will love. (today i've used a bone cookie cutter)

Place on a lined baking tray & cook in the oven for 30 to 35 mins until golden brown.

When they are done place on cooling racks & let cool thoroughly. they harden as they cool.

let your furkid lick the spoon if you like....I couldn't resist Henry's face....

Notes: add 1/2 tsp of salt can be added to these treats to help extend their shelf life (and is optional)

Cinnamon is fine to use, however keep in mind nutmeg is toxic to dogs s add anything that contains this spice. Even small amounts can make them sick.

Then sit back & enjoy them eating the spoils of all that sitting in the kitchen watching you bake their treats.

I hope your FURKIDS all enjoy these Baked Bones as much as HENRY did.

thanks for reading. Lucy

SERENA FABER NELSONFounder & Editor

Serena Faber Nelson is a writer, television producer and fluffy dog owner.

Told by university professors that reports on local dog shows were not acceptable forms of journalism, Serena sought out a career in lifestyle television. Over the past decade her work has been featured on award winning Australian shows such as RPA, Selling Houses Australia, Harry’s Practice and What’s Good for You.

In 2010 Serena created Pretty Fluffy as a place where dedicated dog owners could find stylish products, modern advice, and inspiration for living well with their pets.

Since Pretty Fluffy’s launch, Serena has been a regular contributor to publications such as Modern Dog Magazine, Cesars Way, Dogs Life and more; and in 2012 released her first eBook, co-authored with Sarah Dickerson, 52 Weeks of Treats – Simple and Healthy Dog Treat Recipes for Every Season. She is currently working on her first novel.

A passionate advocate for animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, Serena has been featured on MamaMia and Hope 103.2 Radio discussing prominent welfare issues animals face today. In 2012 she created the worldwide movement The 13 Project.

Serena currently lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband, Andy, and very own pretty fluffy, Soda.

SODAChief Treat Tester

Soda, also known as Sodie, Sodes, Possum and Muffin; is our resident reviewer of all things dog. She’s never met a toy or treat she didn’t like.

Now in her senior years, she still acts like a puppy – we like to think of her as the dog version of Peter Pan who never wants to grow up! Her favourite pastimes include sleeping, eating and going for walks – but not necessarily in that order.

Soda was the inspiration behind the launch of Pretty Fluffy and she continues to inspire us daily.

COCO BEANLead Toy Analyst

Coco Bean, lovingly nicknamed Bean, Munchkin, Little Foot, and Nugget; is quite the character. Picture a whole lot of love and spunk packed into one fun size ball of fluff.

She might be the queen of chillaxing and afternoon naps, but really Coco’s all about the fun. Seriously, give her a squeaky toy and watch her in action – totally obsessed.

Other than toys and naps, her daily favorites include car rides with the windows down, spying on the neighbors, snuggling with her humans, and snacking on sweet bell peppers.

Coco’s silly personality has made her quite the muse for her mum’s photography. Her favorite part? She gets paid in treats.
